Moel Eilio Horseshoe
Date/Time: 01/11/2020 - 31/12/2021, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Location: LLanberis, Llanberis
The Moel Eilio horseshoe is a stunning walk within touching distance of Snowdon itself.
Moel Eilio stands at only 726m but affords magnificent views across the Snowdon range, Nantle ridge, Hebog range, Carneddau and the Glyders as well as across to the Llyn Peninsula.
It is one of the finest horseshoe walks in the National park, and as we navigate above the steep crags along the way we summit its sister peaks Foel Gron 593m and Foel Goch 605m.
Throw in the slightly lung bursting ascent of Moel Cynghoroin at the end of the day to remind us that you don’t have to always climb the highest peaks!
Note: A minimum of 4 people is required for a walk to take place
The route starts in the village of Llanberis and we head out on a narrow tarmac lane for about 1.5km. Climbing quickly to Maen-llwyd-uchaf before swinging off onto a grassy track that takes us past an old Iron age settlement and hill fort.
We can quickly see Moel Eilio (Supporting Bare Hill) in the distance, our way is via a grassy slope virtually. This takes us all the way to the summit plateau which stands at 726m in height.
Here we will stop to take in the wonderful panoramic views and enjoy the shelter at the summit if the weather is not in our favour.
Continuing , we now head steeply South via Bwlch Gwyn and Bwlch Cwm Cesig with views down into Llyn Dwythwch in the distance. This is where the walk really starts to come alive as we navigate above the steep crags below to our left.
We soon summit the peaks of Foel Gron (Round Bare Hill) 593m and Foel Goch (Red Bold Hill) 605m.
Our descent to Bwlch Maesgwm is steep and care will be needed in places but we will pick our path down carefully. Here we will rest and refuel before our final summit push of the day, 207m ascent in just over 1.5km of walking.
Finally our last summit Moel Cynghorion (Bare Hill of The Councillors) 674m is achieved and this gives magnificent views across to Snowdon (with the Llanberis and Ranger paths in view).
We retrace our steps back to Bwlch Maesgwm before our final leg takes us back to Llanberis via Telegraph Valley.
16.3 Km / 10.1 Miles
We want everyone to enjoy their challenge and reach the summit in their own time so will walk at a pace suitable for the whole group. It is important that the group stays together with the leader/s. Depending on numbers taking part groups may be split into smaller groups of similar pace and ability.
Please note that, although we would love to, we can’t promise clear skies on this day!
