Snowdonia Challenge Training Walk - 27/5/17

Snowdonia Challenge Training Walk – 27/5/17

Date/Time: 27/05/2017, 7:00 am - 1:00 pm Location: Pen y Pass, Llanberis

An opportunity to put in a training session for the Snowdonia Challenge and meet some of the people you’ll be sharing an incredible experience with.

Stand on the highest peak in Wales with views over the areas of Snowdonia you’ll be covering in the challenge and get some last minute one to one advice from the guides who will be with you on day.

Leaving early in the morning we will head off along the Pyg Track, returning along the Miners Track and aiming to complete this walk at the pace required to complete each day of the Snowdonia Challenge (20 miles) in 10 hours or less.

At this pace we should arrive back at Pen y Pass between 11am and 12noon (allowing for stops).

About the route

The Pyg Track leaves Pen y Pass and climbs steeply over rough and rocky terrain. On a clear day the views are fantastic over the Glyderau Range and Llanberis Pass. See the knife edge arete that is Crib Goch above you.

Follow the route onto Bwlch y Moch (pass of the pigs) and climb steadily above the glacial lake Llyn Glaslyn. At this point we head towards the summit which is in full view towering 500m above the lake.

Return via the Miners Track.

Miners Track was originally built to serve the Brittania Copper Mine and you will pass some of the mine ruins on the way.

The path takes the same route from the summit as the Pyg Track but then takes a steep ascent from Bwlch Glas to Llyn Llydaw. Once you reach the lake with the Snowdon horseshoe behind you the path becomes mainly wide and level with a good opportunity to stretch your legs!

Distance: 8 miles

Time:4-6 hours

Elevation gain: 723 metres
