Learning to use a map and compass properly is a positive step towards being able to plan your own adventures and give you more confidence in the outdoors.

Our Navigation Training courses are designed to take you through the steps for beginners to those needing a refresher and on to the next steps as you feel comfortable.

Each session will stand alone or why not book 2 days to get extra practice! (Discounts apply)

Introduction to Navigation Skills

Our 1 day introduction to Navigation Skills is designed to give you the basics of using a map and compass. Even if you have no experience at all it’s easier than you think!

Everyone going out into the countryside can increase their confidence and enjoyment by understanding the basics of map reading.

Each group is small (no more than 6) so that whatever your experience our instructors will tailor the day to make sure you gain confidence in your map reading skills.

What will I learn?

On the day you will be introduced to:

  • Map signs and symbols
  • Grid References and contours
  • Orientating the map
  • ‘Handrailing’
  • Pacing and Timing
  • Using a compass and taking a bearing


Family Navigation Workshops

Introduce the younger members of the family to the joys of Navigation. Increase not just their enjoyment of the outdoors but their skills too, while doing something fun and rewarding together.

The perfect opportunity to get to know your map and compass and learn the basics of how to use them to navigate in the outdoors. These are smaller groups suitable for 12+ with an accompanying adult.

Navigation – the next steps

Once you have learned the basics of using a map and compass in the outdoors the next steps are to build confidence and put it into practice. This course will enable you to build on what you have learned and feel comfortable in putting your skills into practice with support and guidance.


Where will we go?

You will spend the day in the beautiful northern region of Snowdonia in North Wales. Some of our favourite places are around Capel Curig or the Moelwyns.

On confirmation of your order we will arrange to meet you at a suitable location.
We can also arrange days in the Shropshire Hills or in the southern Snowdonia region on request.

How much does it cost?


£60 per person – 1 day

£50 per person – 2 days

12 – 17 years old

£40 – per day (when accompanying a full paying adult)

What will I need to bring?

Have a look at our Kit List for information on what you should bring. We can provide a map and compass if you don’t have one.
